Some of the weather that we are getting lately is almost unbelievable with relatively calm days and very little rain. It seems there are a lot of anglers taking advantage of the conditions and wetting a line.
I was down at Sisters Beach on Sunday and the target for the morning was Calamari Squid. We got onto a few good ones and I have been experimenting with a method that I was told about a while ago and it has been fairly successful. It basically involves hanging a squid jig under a polystyrene float and using a small silicone rubber float stopper to set the depth. The advantage of this is you can set the depth so your squid jig is just above the bottom which leaves it in the strike zone and it also results in less jigs being lost. It worked for us and it is a method I will persevere with.

There are some good Gummy Shark around at the moment and we had a report from one of our customers who went flathead fishing with his mate and ended up with nil Flathead and 4 Gummy caught out from Penguin.

The Sea Runner action is really starting to get going with more bait in the rivers and trout starting to actively feed on them. There are a few anglers fishing the estuaries at night and they are being rewarded with some bigger fish. As I have previously mentioned there are many ways to target these fish such as live bait, hard body lures, wobblers and soft plastics. The good old garden worm will also work sometimes. Choose your method and have a go as we have some of the best rivers in the state for sea runners right on our doorstep.

It’s worth a trip to some of the West Coast Lakes such as Lake Roseberry, Pieman and Macintosh as there are some good fish being caught there. The hot spots are where the water flows into the lake from a dam further up. You need to have enough weight on to get your lures deep.

If you are down that way now is the time to fish Lake Selina and Plimsoll. They have Brook Trout in them and they prefer colder water temperatures, so now is the time to have a go at them.

The Ulverstone Young Anglers Development are having another junior angling day at Frombergs Dam this Sunday. Start time 10am till 3pm finish. All are welcome and it’s a guaranteed great day out for the kids
