Paxy’s Bluefin Trip

by Rob Paxevanos
In the late 70’s my dad took my three brothers
and I along with 2 cousins and a family friend
to Eagle Hawk Neck on the South East
Corner of Tasmania.
This was one of our first game fishing
trips, and weather reports were not so detailed
back then so dad wanted a place where there
was good shelter should the prevailing south
easterlies come up from the open expanse of
the Southern Ocean.

The Hemingway Dream

Handline trolling for southern bluefin tuna in a kayak

By Nick Gust
What is possible with modern kayak fishing and how far can
this hybrid sport be taken? Is it realistic to dream of successful
game fishing outings by kayak? How difficult would it actually
be to hook and land a bluefin tuna from a kayak on the great
Southern Ocean? Could these torpedos of streamlined muscle
flip a kayak or tow you out to sea? What about evading hungry
mobs of opportunistic seals? Or is the whole notion really just
an irresponsible fantasy, the product of too many drinks? Keen
Tasmanian anglers have no doubt pondered these questions
before, imagining this holy grail of fishing adventure. Over
the last couple of years in Hobart I decided to seek some
answers. Joining the chase for the world’s most valuable fish
species became something of a quest. Often far offshore on
the wild southern ocean. Alone, in a sea kayak.

Bluefin Tuna Report May  2010

Henry Terry caught this super bluefin on Saturday 8 May at Eaglehawk Neck. It took 2.25 hours to land it on 24kg line and weighed 101kg.
Plenty of smaller ones about and lots free jumping!
Plenty of seals as well just to test your patience.

Southern Bluefin Tuna Report

Although water temperatures are still high, the bluefin have turned up in large numbers at Eaglehawk Neck as well as catches reported over recent days out of Southport. Most fish have been in the 15 - 30 Kg range with the odd larger fish being taken. Yesterday at Tasman Island anglers were getting double hook ups with both Bluefin & Striped Tuna at the same time!!
Although the number of Albacore being caught has slowed down some at The Neck, the size has increased with fish to 18Kg being landed. Further north off Maria Island there are still large numbers of Albacore and Striped Tuna being taken but no reports to date of Bluefin.
Once again the Meridian "Brown Dog", Green Lumo & Pink Bonito have
been the stand out lures for this season so far.

Fish of a lifetime Huge southern bluefin tuna

Geoff Madden's day off with his sons was heaven sent.
Fishing for me has always been a part of my life. Growing up living on the banks of the Derwent River, and having a family holiday home on the East Coast, gave plenty of opportunities from an early age to throw in a line. I'd lived in a family where any sort of fishing-fresh or salt water-was the norm, and somehow, I'd passed on this passion to my sons as well. We'd always welcome the chance to get out on the water- even if it meant taking a day off work if the conditions suited and the opportunity presented itself.
