Message from Nobby Clark

As you'll see from the letter in this link, the South Australian Government has today written to the Federal Government requesting it to prevent the Margiris from fishing Australia's Small Pelagic Fishery.

Email from Eric Abetz - Liberal Senator for Tasmania

Dear Todd
Thanks for your email concerning the Small Pelagic Fishery in
Commonwealth waters.
As somebody that has followed the issues surrounding matters of
fisheries for quite some time, both in a private capacity and as a
former Fisheries Minister and as a Senator for Tasmania, I can let you
know that I do have some understanding of the issues.

Hi Mike,
On behalf the organisers of the above venue, we would sincerely like to apologise for this forum taking place on Father’s day.
We realise this is a special family day but hope your readers would understand that with the FV Margiris due  in Devonport anytime now, we need to get answers from those responsible  ASAP as time is fast running out in regards to the approval process for this vessel.
For us, (because it is Fathers day) we expect that attending numbers will be significantly lower than they normally would, but that said, we hope that this issue is important enough for many people to still decide to come along and support Tasmanian recreational fishers efforts to stop this boat.
We invite your readership to please watch this space in regards to our proposed forum as we wait on the replies from those that have been invited to speak.
If anything changes in regards to the organisation or even cancellation of this event we will let you know as soon as possible.
We thank you for your support.
Kind Regards,
Todd Lambert

The Tasmanian Greens today tabled the  first in a batch of petitions in State Parliament, containing signatures from 3364 Tasmanians opposed to the super trawler FV Margiris fishing in Australian waters.

Greens Primary Industries spokesperson Kim Booth MP thanked everyone who took the time to add their voice, and called on the Labor and Liberal parties to heed the message.

The Australian 16/8/2012

  • ENVIRONMENT Minister Tony Burke is considering a dramatic intervention to suspend approvals for the first super-trawler to operate in Australian waters, while a review of its effects is carried out.

Mr Burke is concerned about the impact the 9500-tonne Dutch-registered ship, Margiris, will have on fish stocks. He is also reportedly alarmed at the speed with which the Australian Fishing Management Authority has rejected his concerns.

MARGIRIS PLANNING TO GIVE TASMANIA A WIDE BERTH?

The Tasmanian Greens today called on SeaFish Tasmania to confirm claims that the FV Margiris would not be docking in the Mersey River at Devonport.

Greens Primary Industries spokesperson Kim Booth said his office had received reliable advice that crew members for the super trawler would be ferried out to sea to board the ship.

Dear Sid Sidebottom

Dear Sid,
I Urge you along with other Federal House of Parliament Members  to listen to the ABC Interview on the Super trawler debate.

There are some extremely important points made here especially on the European Union Subsidies available to the Trawler.

Some very important points are that Seafish Tasmania is setting up a new company “Seafish Tasmania Pelagics” and that is a joint venture with the Dutch owned Company that owns the Super Trawler. (Most of it)

Letter to Hon. Dick Adams MHR

Dear Dick,

As you would be well aware, the Super Trawler issue is a concern to many Tasmanians.

Your office has received numerous emails from myself and no doubt many others on this matter.

In email correspondence from your office dated 2nd July 2012, your office stated.

“I am actually preparing a paper to counter the comments in the press which are scientifically wrong – and has also led to the Minister being misled too on these marine parks which will do bugger all in conserving fish stocks!”

Rally Pictures 11/8/2012

Here are some photos from todays rally on the Derwent River. Certainly a very good turn out (just how many boats it would be hard to hazard a guess, but in the hundreds) with every vessel you could imagine - kayaks, 12 footers, game boats, large cruisers, commercial tourist operators, commercial fishers you name it they were there - indicating the widespread concern and impact across so many in the community. Lots of resounding support from passing road traffic beeping their horns and heaps of spectators lining the banks of the river. Film crews on boats and even a sea plane filming and taking photos as well. The last part of the rally in and around the docks area was great with a huge amount of boats and banners right up close and personal in the centre of Hobart for all to see - it did get pretty tight in there at times with all the boat traffic!!!  Well done to everyone involved and the way it all came together was simply fantastic i thought.
