Sea Run Trout

Mid Sea-Run Season Report


Sea-run trout fishing this year got off to a cracking start in most areas, with the majority of anglers employing nearly every trout fishing technique to secure fish in local estuaries statewide.
Even those anglers fishing the "off-season" lower down in our estuaries for sea-trout commented on the number of fish moving in early August.

South Esk River Report 21/4/2014

Arrived at the South Esk with George Papp around 11am and fished till 3pm. I used soft plastics, while George tried the dry fly. We managed twelve between us and i got onto a couple of beauties around the 3lb mark, which were kept for a feed. The rest were released. Saw a few moving on top to caddis and spinners. Caught mine on Berkley Black & Gold T.Tails,and George got his on a hopper pattern. All fish were in top nick and fought hard, but this will be our last trip for the season.

 PB  Rainbow Trout Caught in the Mersey River  15/4/2014

Well I did leave much earlier today for another session in the Mersey River at Kimberley and I was in the river by 10.30 am this morning. I was going to come back to this area in a couple of days, but this morning I decided to go back and start fishing from where I finished up yesterday. Conditions were much cooler today and there was a cold Easterly breeze blowing too. The good thing about where I am going to fish today, is that the river is sheltered from Easterley winds.

I've had better days 10/4/2014

After a day and a half of light rain and drizzle, it finally eased off this afternoon so I headed off to Merseylea for a short session before the rain returned as forecast. There wasn't any wind to worry about and it was still quite mild as well making ideal conditions for a spin. The Mersey was running nice and clear and I did notice a few small browns jumping in a couple of sections upstream, so I new there were a few fish about.

DASHER  RIVER  GIVES  UP  A  FEW  BROWNS 2/4/2014

After the weather finally cleared here in Sheffield today I headed on over to the Dasher River  (at 3.15pm) some ten minutes from home at Claude Road.  After a one kilometer walk through the paddocks I reached my starting point where I would fish my way back upstream to the main road bridge. I was a little surprised to how low the river level was especially after last weeks 57mms of rain here. It was also a very dark tannin colour too, but still looked good enough for a spin. The sky was now clear and there was just a medium South Westerly breeze blowing which was enough to keep those little pesky flies away that hang around the cow paddocks.

GREAT  AFTERNOON  SESSION  ON  THE  DASHER  RIVER 3/4/2014

After a fair afternoon on the Dasher River yesterday I thought it would be worth while to try it once again this afternoon. I have another friendly land owner who lets me fish his property and so I made the decision to try there today. I will have close on  two kilometers of river that I can fish and I'm hoping it will fish a little better than where I fished yesterday. The wind was much stronger and gusty today and this was good as it will put a ripple on the surface which is better than being flat calm.

A  MUCH  DIFFERENT  TRIP  TO  MERSEYLEA  THIS  TIME 1/4/2014

I decided to head back to Merseylea (at 2.30pm) and have another spin along the same stretch of the Mersey River where I did fairly well for the Pirtek Fishing Challenge last Sunday week. On my arrived Neil Morrow from the IFS pulled up along side me and we had a nice chat for around 45 minutes before he had to head off. Neil was doing the rounds checking on the Anglers Access areas to see if they needed tidying up  or repairs. He did tell me that the IFS were very concerned about the amount of rubbish that had been left laying around at Lake Kara and if it keeps up, well it could well be closed to fishing.

JUST  AN  AVERAGE  SESSION  ON  THE  MEANDER  RIVER  TODAY 31/3/2014

Being the last day of March and  given that the conditions were pretty good I thought I would give the Meander River a go today after lunch. The weather was a little on the humid side with a light East to North Easterly breeze and very heavy cloud cover making it reasonably good for trout fishing. The only down fall was the wind direction, but in saying that it was very light and so it hopefully won't effect the fishing that much.

MERSEY  GIVES  UP  A  BEAUTY  TODAY  FOR  THE  PIRTEK  CHALLENGE 23-3-2014

What a top morning it was for the start of the Pirtek Challenge, well it was here in Sheffield at 7.00am. It was almost calm with just a light to medium cloud cover as I left for Merseylea for my stint of fishing in the hope of picking up a decent size brown for the Pirtek Challenge. I wasn't expecting any thing over big even though I did spot a few very big browns surface feeding on hoppers the other day on a nice long and deep section of the Mersey River. That was my reason for going and catching the hoppers last Friday as they are what I was intending to use today.

Merseylea 21/3/2014

CATCHING  GRASSHOPPERS  AND  THEN  OFF  TROUT  FISHING
Shot off to Merseylea around 10.30am this morning armed with a kids butterfly net as I was going after grasshoppers and not trout for a change. It was very overcast and dull with rain not that far away going by the conditions.  Once at Merseylea I headed off through the tall grassy paddocks with net in hand and  started swishing it through the grass. Started to get a few but they weren't that big which was a little disappointing as there were much bigger ones here a few days ago. With it being cooler and overcast probably didn't help either. I did manage a couple of large ones and around thirty small hoppers, plus I picked up a few nice big black crickets. Trout just love these big black crickets too, and so they'll be the first ones to go on the hook.

Kimberley 20/3/2014

SHORT  SPIN  SESSION  AT  KIMBERLEY
Left home this afternoon and was on my way to the Meander River for a spin session, but I didn't get there. While driving along the Bridle Track Road I had a change of mind and decided to fish the Mersey River at Kimberley instead. I thought I would just have a short spin session today instead of putting in a full afternoon on the Meander. I will do that some time next week. The river was low and clear and there was a light Nor- Easterly breeze which was just enough to put a light ripple on the surface every now and then. With the Pirtek Challenge on this weekend this was one of the main reasons I have been fishing the Mersey over the past few days, as this will be the river I'll be fishing for the challenge.

Trout tips - from tackle shops

We did a bit of a runaround Tasmania’s tackle stores to see what their tips for the first month or so of the tackle season were. We asked what the top three places to fish were, plus lures, flies, baits and a few other things.
Here is a rundown on their answers Whenever, and wherever you fish - anywhere, or for any fish in the world - ask the locals and especially ask at the local tackle store. They know what was caught today, yesterday and on what.
