Coastal Catches 26/4/2012

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that Lake Plimsoll could be worth a look in the latter part of the season as the water would be cooling down which is favourable for Brook Trout. Well you have one week left to go and there have been some good fish caught there recently.

The Brown Trout fishing season ends for most waters this Sunday but there are a number of Rainbow Trout waters such as Lake Rowallan and Lake Macintosh that stay open until the end of May. Other waters such as Lake Barrington, Great lake, Brushy Lagoon, Huntsman Lake and Lake Pedder will stay open all year
The competition hoodoo continues. This time it was Eaglehawk Neck. The fish seem to know when the competition starts and go into hiding. Of course the day after the competition finishes there is a 90kg Bluefin caught that would have easily won by a country mile.
We are still getting reports of some good Australian Salmon in the Penguin area. I was told that there are plenty of Cocky Salmon in the Mersey River and there are schools of bigger salmon out the front. Look for bird activity and you will generally find the schools of bigger fish.
If you are in the Ulverstone area then you should have a look for Silver Trevally in the Leven River.
The Pirtek Fishing challenge was held on the 15th April and the results were announced last weekend. The nominated fish for the Tasmanian section was Flathead and it was great to see three coastal anglers winning the major prizes. Marcus Popowski was 1st with a 68cm flathead, Daniel Paull 2nd 65.8cm and Mason Paull 3rd 62.7cm. Jamie Harris also won the mystery prize so it is safe to say that the NW Coast cleaned up.
Young Anglers Development are having their final fishing day at Frombergs dam Ulverstone this Sunday 29th April from 10am till 3pm.
