With Christmas behind us a lot of anglers are now on their summer holidays. This sets the mind thinking as to where to spend the holidays with or without the family. Usually this time of the year some early reports start to filter in of Albacore at the shelf, and bait schools start showing up on mass. This gets game fishermen warm to the heart and they start breaking out the heavy tackle to head to the blue water for some serious trolling. Each year is different with the average size of fish being usually smaller than later in the season and showing up in sometimes the strangest of places. Last year it was Merricks reef that produced good sport early. So how do we give ourselves a better than average chance of turning a reel? Well there are a few different ways to look at it and if you slowly put the puzzle together with a bit of homework you can tip the odds in your favour.
All changes are reflected in the 2009-10 Recreational Sea Fishing Guide and on new fish measuring rulers which are available at Service Tasmania outlets and most bait and tackle shops.
Set Line licence: A licence is now required to use any set line. A set line is either a dropline or a longline, with up to 30 hooks. A person may only use one set line at a time.
The Minister for Primary Industries and Water is currently seeking nominations to fill nine vacancies for recreational fisheries representatives on the Recreational Fishery Advisory Committee (RecFAC).

Well what can I say what year it has been, there have been plenty of fish caught right throughout the winter in the Tamar River with trevally and kingfish amongst the mix of species caught during the off season.
Now that it is warming up and the mercury hitting close to 30. There are many fishos looking for something to target.

Tuesday 12 November saw me catch my first fish on a dry fly in the highland lakes. I had heard on the grape vine that there had been an odd fish or two coming to dries during the first weeks of November. Previous to all this there has been some great fishing to tailers on Little Pine Lagoon and frog feeders in the Nineteen Lagoons. To see the antics of these fish the angler needs to be lakeside at daybreak or late evening, although there are odd times such as a very overcast rainy day where the fish will do their tailing, chasing and charging acts all day.

Many anglers are preparing for the opening of the new angling season on Saturday 7 August and it's shaping up to be another good one with the fishery in excellent health as a result of last year’s drought breaking rains. There are many great fishing locations around the State from which to choose for the opening weekend and early season fishing but here are a few suggestions.
